September Spoils
Key Weekly Performance Stats:
- S&P 500: +0.09%
- Nasdaq 100: +0.38%
- Russel 2000: -0.01%
- Bitcoin: +2.36%
Last week, stocks were choppy as traders balanced solid economic data with stubborn inflation and higher yields. SPX finished up about 0.1%, NDX gained roughly 0.4%, and RTY added around 0.1%. JOLTS showed about 7.3 million job openings, while both ISM manufacturing and services stayed in expansion. Friday’s jobs report showed 162,000 payroll gains with unemployment holding at 4.1%, which helped push Treasury yields higher.
Iran was also back in focus as renewed U.S.-Iran tensions around the Strait of Hormuz helped send oil higher. Trump said the latest U.S. campaign would not last “too long,” while his administration also appeared to be looking for a path toward de-escalation. On the company side, Broadcom posted another huge quarter, Snowflake kept up strong growth, and Lululemon sank after cutting its outlook again. Adobe also announced that Anil Chakravarthy will take over as CEO in December.
Looking ahead to next week, it's a four-day trading week with markets closed Monday for Labor Day. Thursday brings August PPI, while Friday is the big one with August CPI, real earnings, and preliminary September University of Michigan consumer sentiment. There’s no Fed meeting next week, with the next FOMC decision coming Sept. 16. Oracle and Adobe are also among the bigger earnings reports to watch. As always, stick to your trading plan and respect your risk. Godspeed.
