This is fine.. right?
Key Weekly Performance Stats:
- S&P 500: -0.61%
- Nasdaq 100: -1.62%
- Russel 2000: -0.79%
- Bitcoin: +0.30%
Wall Street finished lower after a volatile week driven by surging oil prices, rising Treasury yields and renewed concerns about how much Big Tech is spending on AI. The NDX fell 1.62%, while the S&P 500 lost 0.6%, the Dow slipped 0.4% and the Russell 2000 dropped 1.1%. Energy stocks were the clear winners as Brent crude briefly climbed above $100 before retreating to $96.78 on Friday.
The economic data was mixed but generally pointed to continued growth. The Conference Board’s Leading Economic Index declined 0.2% in June, while S&P Global’s July flash Composite PMI rose to 53.6, its strongest reading in eight months. June new-home sales increased to an annualized rate of 628,000, while the median selling price fell 2.7% from a year earlier. Earnings were less forgiving. Tesla sank after reporting weaker profits and negative free cash flow, Alphabet fell despite strong cloud growth after raising its AI spending forecast, and Intel dropped even after beating expectations. Trump said Friday that the U.S. and Iran were still talking, but warned that Tehran was not yet ready to reach a deal, keeping oil and geopolitical risk firmly in focus.
Next week starts with June durable-goods orders on Monday, followed by Conference Board consumer confidence on Tuesday. The Fed wraps up its two-day meeting Wednesday with its rate decision and press conference. Thursday brings the first estimate of second-quarter GDP, June personal income and spending, and the PCE inflation report. The Employment Cost Index closes out the week Friday. Microsoft, Meta, Amazon and Apple also headline a huge earnings slate, with investors closely watching AI spending and forward guidance. The NYSE is open on its normal schedule throughout the week. As always, stick to your trading plan and respect your risk. Godspeed.
