The Trade
Entry
I created a large (relative to my account size) bullish position on the Small Cap sector, $IWM, when the inflation report came in cool, below expectations, on July 11th. My reasoning was simple: Lower rates means access to cheaper capital. Small businesses need cheap money to survive.
Exit 1
When the play went up +400%, I locked in 1/5 of my position (15 of 75 calls) to take all downside risk off the table. At this point, the worst that could happen would be that the play ended breakeven. If that scenario played out, there is a good chance I would also be super embarrassed due to how public I was about this play.
Exit 2
I really wanted to ride IWM up to $228, which was an upside gap fill from late 2023. Unfortunately, the market had different plans. I had to take what the market was willing to offer. As soon as the Russell showed weakness, I took my money and said thank you! I can always reenter if things turn around.
